Panic and fear have become the order of the day in some villages in Benue State as some gunmen, suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, have allegedly killed seven persons in villages in State.
According to information received from a reliable source, who resides in one of the villages, gunmen it was learnt went on a killing spree in Igede village where they allegedly shot six persons dead while one other man was murdered in Ologba Agatu community.
One of the deceased was identified as Samuel Peter. His mourning friends said he was on his way from Ologba Agatu village when he was killed.
Another deceased, a commercial motorcycle rider identified as Akpa, was among the six killed in Igede village when the Otukpo Local Government Council Chairmanship election also took place two weeks ago.
One of the sources, who identifies himself as Adeyi George, said “Akpa was a very jovial person. He was killed alongside five other Igedes by Fulani herdsmen living in that village. We learnt he drove a passenger to Igede village that fateful day where he met his misfortune, he has since been buried in Otobi village “.
The villagers are also using this opportunity to call on the State Government, Security Agencies and the support of the Federal Government to stop the menace of the herdsmen in the state.
When the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer was contacted, SP Catherine Anene said two persons were murdered. “The villagers told us it was herdsmen that did the killings. It was two persons that were killed. We are still investigating the murders” she said.
