As people await the decision of the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode on the fate of the General Overseer of the Christian Praying Assembly, Rev. Chukwuemeka Ezeugo, popularly known as Rev. King, who is on death row, members of his church have embarked on a fasting and prayer session to avert the confirmation of the planned execution by the State government.

Lagos State Attorney-General of the state, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem, at a press conference on Tuesday stated that unlike previous administrations, Governor Ambode would sign the necessary documents to execute those on death row in the state.

Kazeem reportedly said the development was at the instruction of Governor Ambode and that the state had begun reviewing the matter after prison officials complained of the highhandedness of some death row inmates who felt that they had certain rights which excluded them from being executed.

Though, no date has been fixed to the effect on the execution of the inmates, the statement have sent chill down their spine and have embarked on spiritual activities to avert the execution.

When our correspondent visited the church on Wednesday and Thursday, the members were heard making supplication prayer to God to intervene in the case of their General Overseer.

Efforts to speak to the members proved abortive as the reporter was not allowed to enter the church premises.

However, a resident who spoke to our correspondent confirmed the development and said some of them were openly crying.

“Since the members heard about the planned execution of Rev. King and there has been tension and panic in the church and members have embarked on serious prayer for God to intervene,” the resident said.

A source within the prisons also confirmed that since the information filtered into the prisons yard where Rev. King and other death row inmates was remanded pending when they will be executed, some of them broke down in tears while some have intensified efforts in prayers and refused to eat since then.
