‎The Rivers State Flood Prevention and Management Committee has conducted inspection visits to flood camps in the Orashi region of the State to assess the condition of occupants residing in the facilities.

‎The Rivers State Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Flood Prevention and Management Committee, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, led the team to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps at Government Primary School Okarki, Government Primary School Mbiama in Ahoada West, the IDP Camp in Ahoada East, as well as Central School 1 and Central School 2 in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area on Wednesday, 3rd December, 2025.

‎Addressing some internally displaced persons at Government Primary School Okarki, the Deputy Governor, represented by a member of the Committee and Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Local Government Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Awani Itong, informed the occupants that the Committee was in the camp on the directive of the Deputy Governor, noting that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, in his magnanimity and love for the people, had provided funds for the rehabilitation of the camp.

‎At the Ahoada East and ONELGA IDP Camps, Prof. Odu explained that the Committee had earlier notified the Chairmen of the benefiting LGAs that it would monitor the level of compliance in the distribution of relief materials to affected persons.

‎ “I am sure your Local Government Areas received the relief items, and when they were delivered, we informed you that we would monitor the distribution. We have now come to ask if the palliatives have been distributed to the people affected by the flood,” Prof. Odu stated.

‎In his remarks, King Elijah Harry Duan, Okilom-Akie VIII and Paramount Ruler of Okarki Kingdom, expressed gratitude to Governor Siminalayi Fubara for selecting Okarki as one of the sites for an IDP Camp, noting that without the facility, many residents would have been at the mercy of the flood. He added that the camp currently shelters affected persons from eight communities located along the southern stretch of the Orashi River.

Following the visit, the President General of respected Niger Delta socio-cultural group, the Orashi National Congress, ONC, Amb Comrade Emeni Ibe, has highly commended the Prof Ngozi Odu-Led Rivers State Flood Committee for visiting to monitor and check the level of compliance.

“I must highly commend the Deputy Governor and the Flood Prevention and Management Committee for their visit to Orashi region. I believe that their oversight visit will wake up the Local Council authorities, who may have just received the relief materials without proper distribution. The visit also afforded the Committee the opportunity to inspect the condition of the IDP Camps to know how to further help the welfare of the affected people” Amb Comrade Emeni Ibe said.
