ULOKA CHIBUIKE
The problem in our society today originated when young boys suddenly became wealthy and started receiving chieftaincy titles and honours that were traditionally reserved for proven and accomplished elites.
The decline of our norms, culture, and values can be attributed to the excessive praise given to these individuals solely based on their unexplained wealth, by self-proclaimed elders and traditional rulers.
Growing up in Ogbunike, many of us were inspired to pursue our dreams and break free from poverty through the core principles of ethics, norms, values, and morality, which are the true markers of success. Witnessing individuals with questionable means being shamed and excluded, while only proven elites received chieftaincy titles, reinforced our commitment to these values. Unfortunately, the present state of society reveals a significant reversal.
Today’s youth have forsaken hard work in favor of quick and questionable schemes which they termed “Hustle”, and recognition is no longer based on values or morality, but on the depth of one’s pockets, regardless of how the wealth was acquired.
Elders and leaders celebrate ill-gotten riches, oblivious to how our society has become plagued with numerous ills and vices.
Our society is currently suffering, and the journey towards redemption is undeniably challenging.
