With the new trend in crime in Lagos in the past few weeks, especially with people committing and attempting suicide, Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni says the Force has taken a proactive step to arrest the ugly situation.
CP Owoseni said he had ordered immediate patrol of all bridges in the metropolitan Lagos State to stop the unfortunate growing rate of people attempting suicide.
Owoseni lamented the rate at which people commit suicide in the country, describing it as worrisome.
“We cannot fold our arms and continue to watch the drama unfolding, something drastic has to be done ” said Owoseni after he met 58-year-old Mrs Taiwo Titilayo Momoh, the woman who attempted to commit suicide by jumping into the Lagoon on Third Mainland Bridge on Friday.
The Commissioner of Police declared that it was now an offence for individuals to walk on bridges in the state and that no vehicle would be allowed to stop on any bridge henceforth in order to prevent suicide incidences.
PM EXPRESS can report that suicide is on the trend now. Few days ago, a medical doctor, Allwell Orji jumped into the Lagoon from Third Mainland Bridge. His body was recovered on Wednesday, 22 March. Friday morning, a woman, Abigael Ogunyinka was reportedly rescued by fishermen after she jumped into the Lagoon through the third Mainland Bridge, while another suspect was arrested and charged before a Lagos court for jumping inside a well in Surulere. He was rescued. The court ordered he should be remanded in prison.
