Bayelsa State has arrived in Abuja with a strong and competitive contingent for the 2026 National Para Sports Festival, reaffirming its dominance and commitment to inclusive sports development in Nigeria.

The team, made up of 244 athletes and coaches alongside 58 support staff, is fully prepared to compete at the highest level as the state targets a historic third consecutive national title, having won the previous two editions of the festival.

Speaking ahead of the competition, the Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Baraladei Daniel Igali, expressed confidence in the team’s readiness and commended the leadership behind the successful mobilization of the contingent.

“We are proud of the team we have assembled. Bayelsa has built a strong tradition in para sports, and this contingent represents the very best of our talent, resilience, and preparation. I must commend the Acting Director of Sports, Andrew Aye, for his leadership and organization, particularly in ensuring that our athletes travelled in comfort with well-arranged transportation for the journey to Abuja.”

He further acknowledged the collective effort that made the outing possible.

“I also wish to appreciate the Permanent Secretary and the management staff of both the Ministry of Sports Development and the Sports Council for their inclusive and collaborative leadership. Their coordination and commitment continue to strengthen our systems and drive results.”

He reiterated that under the leadership of His Excellency, Douye Diri, the state continues to lead in promoting equality in sports.

“In Bayelsa, there is no distinction between able-bodied and para athletes. Welfare, allowances, and prize monies are treated equally. This reflects our belief in fairness, inclusion, and respect for every athlete.”

Governor Diri has charged the contingent to “take no prisoners” at the festival, urging them to reciprocate the immense support his administration has consistently provided by delivering outstanding performances. He expressed strong confidence in their ability to once again do Bayelsa proud on the national stage.

The Commissioner added that he will be in Abuja during the festival to lend support and encouragement to the athletes as the competition progresses.

With high morale and proven pedigree, Bayelsa State heads into the competition as a formidable force, determined to once again set the standard in Nigerian para sports.
