It’s truly disheartening to witness the ugly turn that the comparison between Chinua Achebe and Wole Soyinka has taken. Both writers are remarkable in their own right, and their work should not be a cause for division, but rather a celebration of the rich literary heritage that they have contributed to. The fact that one won the Nobel Prize and the other didn’t should not be used as a basis for fostering ethnic divisions.

 

It’s important for us to remember that it’s possible to respectfully disagree with someone’s politics or opinions without resorting to personal attacks, character assassination, or attempts to distort facts. We need to rise above these divisive tactics and focus on engaging in constructive dialogue that respects the contributions of both writers.

We should strive to be mindful and respectful in our interactions, especially when discussing sensitive topics. Let’s not allow our political agendas to overshadow the appreciation for our literary icons and the positive impact of their work. We have a responsibility to contribute to a more united and understanding society, rather than perpetuating division. Let’s celebrate the diversity and richness of our literary culture without turning it into a battleground for ethnic differences.
