President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday, 4th April, 2026, commissioned the Gateway International Airport in Iperu, Ogun State, with Governor Dapo Abiodun describing the project as a major step in improving connectivity and supporting economic activity in the state.
The commissioning, which also featured the unveiling of Gateway Air, new aircraft, electric motorcycles, security vehicles and agricultural tractors, signals increased infrastructure delivery across key sectors of the state’s economy.
Speaking at the event, Abiodun said his administration had, over the last seven years, focused on expanding infrastructure to fully leverage Ogun State’s proximity to Lagos.
“When we assumed office, it was clear that to maximise our location, we had to address infrastructure deficits. What you are seeing today reflects deliberate efforts to improve mobility, support enterprise and create opportunities for our people,” he said.
The governor outlined achievements across sectors, including the construction of over 1,600 kilometres of roads such as the Epe–Ijebu Ode Expressway, Sango–Abeokuta Expressway and the Sagamu–Iperu–Ode Remo–Sapade corridor.
The airport and supporting projects are expected to reshape the movement of goods and people within Ogun and the Southwest, reducing reliance on Lagos for international travel and cargo handling. For manufacturers clustered around Ota, Agbara and Sagamu, the development offers a closer export route, with potential reductions in logistics costs and turnaround time.
Industry observers say the shift could also ease pressure on Lagos’ aviation infrastructure while positioning Ogun to capture a larger share of regional trade and investment flows.
Abiodun also cited progress in housing, with over 7,000 affordable homes delivered, and healthcare, including 140 primary healthcare centres and the 200-bed Gateway Medical Centre of Excellence.
President Tinubu commended the governor for what he described as a prudent use of increased federal allocations.
“In less than seven years, you have demonstrated commitment, vision and patriotism to grow Nigeria. I am pleased to see that resources are being used to build and improve the lives of the people,” he said.
Also speaking, Senate President Godswill Akpabio commended the governor for the airport project and the visible application of public funds.
The event drew political leaders and business figures, reflecting growing interest in Ogun State’s development direction.
