The contest for Aguata Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives has taken a new dimension as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has officially cleared Hon Onunkwo Ebere Anthony as the candidate of the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, for the January 16, 2027 National Assembly elections.
The approval was contained in the final list of candidates released by INEC for the 2027 polls, following the successful conclusion of APM’s nomination process and the submission of all relevant documents to the commission.
With this clearance, Umuchu community in Aguata Local Government Area now has three frontline candidates vying for the same House of Representatives seat.
The newly cleared APM flagbearer joins Dr Chibueze Ofobuike of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and Chief Johnbosco Onunkwo of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who are also in the race. This development has positioned Umuchu as one of the most politically active communities in Anambra State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued after the announcement, Hon Onunkwo described the clearance as a call to service and an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the development of Aguata Federal Constituency.
“Hon Onunkwo is a committed son of Aguata, a man of the people, and a strong voice who stands ready to deliver quality representation, development, and accountable leadership to our people,” the statement read.
Accepting the mandate, Onunkwo welcomed other contestants to the field and called for a free, fair, and peaceful electoral process devoid of bitterness and rancour.
“I welcome other contestants to the field and look forward to a keen contest based on free, fair, and peaceful electoral process. Together, the future is bright and we will get there,” he said.
Political observers note that with three strong contenders from Umuchu alone, the internal dynamics of Aguata Federal Constituency politics will be keenly watched ahead of January 2027. The development is already generating conversations across party lines in the constituency which comprises of about seven Local Government areas.
INEC has fixed January 16, 2027 for National Assembly elections nationwide, and campaigns have commenced in line with the electoral timetable.
However, analysts have raised concerns over the implication of having three candidates from the same community contesting for one seat.
With three sons from the same community contesting the same House of Representatives seat, analysts warn of possible vote fragmentation that could affect Umuchu’s chances.
“Aguata Federal Constituency covers 7 LGAs. If Umuchu votes are divided in three ways, it reduces our chances of producing the next Rep,” a political stakeholder who pleaded anonymity told P.M.EXPRESS.
The stakeholder further noted that while it is a thing of pride for Umuchu to produce multiple qualified candidates, there is a need for strategic consultations to ensure the community maximizes the opportunity instead of working at cross purposes.
The emergence of three candidates from one community is also expected to raise the tempo of campaigns in Aguata, with issues of representation, development, youth empowerment, and federal presence likely to dominate discussions.
As the 2027 elections approach, all eyes will be on Umuchu and Aguata Federal Constituency to see how the contest plays out among the three contenders and other candidates from across the constituency.
