Lagos Trains New 250 Facilitators To Boost Adult Literacy Programme

In furtherance of the Lagos State Government objective of addressing the problem of adult literacy in the State, the Government has trained another batch of 250 facilitators in Andragogigal method of teaching adults under the Kick Illiteracy Out of Lagos (Eko N’ke Ko) programme.
The Special Adviser on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh announced this on Tuesday in Lagos at the opening of the 3rd Batch of a two-day programme on Andragogigal Method of teaching Adult Learners in the State involving another 250 facilitators.
He said the Eko N’ke Ko (Lagos is Learning) Programme was launched last year in alliance with the policy thrust of the Government Akinwunmi Ambode’s government to reduce the menace of illiteracy in the State to the barest minimum thus the need to train 1,000 new facilitators who will man the additional 1,000 new Adult Literacy Centers across the State.
“In the year 2015, the enrollment rate of adult learners was 7,859 while in year 2016, the enrolment of learner stood at 12,123 and completers rate 11,854 thus in order to boast the literacy rate, a target of 95 per cent literacy level was set in 2016 to be achieved by year 2019 hence the total number of 532 literacy centers operating in the state as at that time was agreed to be increased by 1,000,” Bank-Olemoh averred.
Bank-Olemoh, who was represented by the Director, Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Kemi Kalesanwo, stressed that the need to increase the literacy centers in the State necessitated the training of the 1,000 new facilitators.
He added that so far no fewer than 750 new facilitators have been trained on the Andragogigal method of teaching adult learners in the state.
The Special Adviser noted that earlier in January this year, the first batch of 250 new facilitators were trained, another batch of 250 facilitators were similarly trained in October while the present batch of new 250 facilitators makes up the 750 facilitators that have been trained so far under the programme.
He emphasized that Adult Literacy in the State is free thus he called on all adult illiterates in the State to key into the Eko N’ke Ko (Lagos in Learning) Progamme in order to reduce illiteracy to the barest minimum in the State.
Adult Literacy Centers are spread across the state and can be found in all local government and local council development Areas, faith-based organizations, market places, motor parks, mechanic villages, abattoirs and schools.
