Sponsor Splashes N1.5million On Awolowo Memorial Tourney

Organisers of the 8th editions of U-10 boys and U-17 girls Obafemi & HID Awolowo Memorial Kids Cup have announced the sum of N1.5 million naira as the prize money for the winners of both categories.

Chairman Organizing Committee, Aliu Ganiu disclosed to our correspondent that the title sponsor Value Jet Airline Limited has concluded plans to splash millions of naira on the teams that would reach the semi final stage in both categories.

According to him, the champions of the tournament would go home with the sum of N300, 000 with a giant trophy. First runner up would receive N200, 000, while second runner up and fourth position would pocket N150, 000 and N100, 000 respectively.

Ganiu thanked the cup donor for their financial support and promised that the tourney would be better organized and urged the other corporate bodies to channel their resources on grassroots football development.

He however revealed that the tourney was organized to mark the 30 years anniversary of Obafemi Awolowo Foundation.

Commenting on the teams registered for the tournament, Ganiu said 24 teams involved in male category, while 16 teams featured in the female category. He disclosed that all the teams were carefully selected based on their football pedigree in Lagos and urged them to abide by the rules and regulations of the game.

“The competition has name and we cannot just allow any indiscipline team to play the competition because of the image of the competition. If we found any club guilty during or after the game would be disqualified .I wish all the teams best of luck in their outings,” he said.

The competition which kicked off yesterday at the White football pitch, Orile saw Solution boys of Sango defeated Global Babes of Mushin 2-1 in the opening match.Four matches would be played tomorrow in both male and female categories.
