The government of Osun has commiserated with the family of Mr. Orlando Julius Ekemode and the Nigerian entertainment industry over the passage of the veteran saxophonist, singer, bandleader and songwriter, on Thursday night at the age of 79.

In a statement signed by Funke Egbemode, the Honourable Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, the Osun government said, “We are also extending our sympathies to the good people of Osun state over the demise of the Ijebu-Jesa icon”.

“Orlando Julius will be fondly remembered for his contributions to the creation, growth, and popularization of Afro-pop, as well as the great influence he had on the American soul and the parallel roots of modern Afro-beat and jazz.”

“With a musical career starting off in the 1960s, Orlando Julius flew the flag of highlife music until his death.”

“Nigeria, and Osun in particular, will miss one of its finest entertainers and multi-talented musician, whose songs and acts remain evergreen.”

“We also commiserate with the Elegboro of Ijebu Jesa, Oba Moses Agunsoye, on the death of Orlando, who earned the honorary title of ‘Gbeluniyi’, in recognition of how he proclaimed the name of Ijebu Jesa across the globe.”

“We pray God grants him eternal rest, and his family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
