A 26-year old man, Izuchukwu Chigere, has broken his two legs after he attempted suicide by jumping from the Court’s storey building in order to escape being prosecuted over a criminal offence in Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at the Ejigbo Magistrate’s Court on 3rd October, 2022, when Chigere was brought to Court to be arraigned.
He was earlier arrested for stripping himself naked in public and threatened to burn down Trendy Hotel in Oke Afa, Ejigbo area of Lagos, over an altercation with the owner of the hotel.
The suspect, Chigere, did the unthinkable after the owner of the hotel demanded for payment of a certain amount of money from him for selling Shawarma in front of the hotel and he refused.
His refusal led to a serious disagreement between him and the management of the hotel and in the process, he reportedly stripped himself naked and threatened to burn down the hotel if the owner continues to intimidate him.
His conduct and the threat to burn down the hotel was reported to the Police at Ejigbo Division. He was arrested and detained at the station for interrogation but he still continued with the threat insisting that he will burn down the hotel.
The Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Court on two counts of conduct likely to cause breach of public peace and attempted arson.
While he was about to be arraigned, he attempted to escape and jumped from the Court room upstairs. When he landed on the floor, he broke his two legs, was said to have bled profusely and unable to run.
The Police and the complainant, who brought him before the Court were in a fix whether to abandon him there or not until the Court Magistrate directed that the complainant should take him to the hospital for treatment and he was then taken away from the Court premises.
The defendant, Chigere, may not have been prosecuted but he may likely not walk again with his two legs because of the injury he sustained from jumping from the Court upstairs.
