A 24-year old man, Abubakar Aliu, who was rearrested and charged before the Court in Lagos State for committing another criminal offence, has told the Court that he was released about five days ago from the prison after spending several months in custody.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at the Isolo Magistrates Court presided by Magistrate O.A. Akokhia, where Aliu was arraigned by the Police operatives from the Isheri Oshun Division.
He admitted to have committed another offence that brought him before the Court and pleaded guilty to the charge against him.
The defendant, Aliu, was arrested again days after he was released from custody after he went to a house on Unity Street, Kudehinbu Estate, Ijegun area of Lagos. He had entered the house of one Lateef Olabisi through his fence, was caught and handed over to the Police.
During interrogation, the Police discovered that he was just released from prison custody for committing similar crime, which led him to prison. He explained that the owner of the house, Mr. Olabisi, erected a lower fence which made it easy for him to climb and enter the house before he was caught in the act.
The Police found him culpable and subsequently charged him before the Court for the alleged offence.
When he was arraigned, he pleaded guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Oje Uagbale, then asked the Court to give a short date for facts and sentence since he pleaded guilty to enable him to present the facts of the matter so that the Court will sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Akokhia, ordered his remand in custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when the prosecutor will present the facts so that he will be sentenced accordingly.
The matter was adjourned till 7th December, 2022, for facts and sentence.
Aliu may likely be spending several months again in custody having been identified as a notorious criminal by the Police and the Court because of his criminal record.
