Police operatives from the Ogun State Command have arrested a 27-year old suspected female kidnapper, Mariam Ayila, for allegedly abducting a 13-year old girl and keeping her in captivity while negotiating for N250,000 ransom from her family before she was caught.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened while the girl was running errands for her father on her way to Agbara Market.
The suspect, Mariam Ayila, was said to have accosted and kidnapped her before she started demanding for ransom in order to release her. She equally threatened to make the girl disappear if her request was not met.
However, the Police foiled her plot and got her arrested on Tuesday, 20th December, 2022, as detectives from Agbara Police Divisional Headquarters, Ogun State, closed in on her.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed that she was in Police custody undergoing interrogation over her criminal conduct.
He stated that having kidnapped the victim, who is a minor, Ayila placed a call to her father, Ismail Yusau, informing him that his daughter had been abducted, and now in her custody.
She demanded the payment of N250,000 from Yusau and threatened that if the money was not paid, he would never set his eyes on his daughter again.
However, shortly after the call was dropped, Yusau reported the abduction incident to the Police, after which detectives were mobilized to arrest the suspect.
SP Oyeyemi disclosed that efforts to arrest Ayila by the Divisional Police Officer, Agbara Division, Abiodun Salau, paid off by the prompt mobilization of his men to rescue the victim and nab the suspect.
Oyeyemi stated that the suspect was traced to her hideout at Atan Ota area, where she was arrested and the little girl rescued unhurt, while adding that an investigation had revealed that the suspect had earlier kidnapped a young girl and collected ransom before releasing her.
He stated that the suspect will be charged before the Court for abduction and kidnapping under the Criminal law of Ogun State but that will be after the conclusion of investigation.
