International Council of Nurses (ICN)’s national nursing associations are bringing some of the most cutting-edge case studies to share at the ICN Congress which holds at Palais de Congrès in Montreal, Canada in July.

The Japanese Nurses Association will share how public health nurses, midwives, and nurses in Japan have worked together to address the challenges of Universal Health Coverage, in a country facing and ageing population and declining birth rates. This symposium will examine how JNA is currently working to improve UHC and will advance the discussion of the potential contribution of nursing to the realization of UHC.

Confronting and mitigating systemic racism within the profession and addressing the impact that racism has on nurses and nursing is a critical challenge that will fundamentally improve the nursing care received by underserved populations. This symposium will detail the ways in which the American Nurses Association and the Canadian Nurses Association have developed and are executing a plan to actively confront racism and discrimination, starting from within the organization and eventually leading to the profession at large.

The Colegio de Enfermeras de Costa Rica will present two nursing initiatives: one on the need to primary health care through nursing; and a second on training in drug treatment and care, which has had an impact on the improvement of human rights and dignity of drug users in urban and rural areas.

The global nursing shortage and the migration of nurses from developing to developed countries will be addressed by the Nurses Association of Jamaica. The symposium will look at the push and pull factors affecting nurse migration globally and discuss sustainable strategies to mitigate this phenomenon.
