A 31-year old man, Ayomide Adewale, has landed in trouble in Lagos for impregnating his Facebook lover, Miss Hannah Eniku, inducing abortion in order to terminate the pregnancy but she died in the process.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Gospel Street, Mashalashi, Alagbado, Lagos, where Adewale resides.
The matter was reported to the Police in the area and Adewale was arrested and transferred to the Homicide Detention of the SCID, Yaba, for investigation and was found culpable for murder.
According to Police sources, the deceased met the suspect on Facebook, started dating in June 2022 and in the process the deceased got pregnant for him. He was said to have pleaded with her to abort the pregnancy because he was not financially stable.
Sometime in November 2022, the deceased visited the suspect’s house, where he allegedly gave her some concoction to drink instead of taking her to hospital for the abortion.
The deceased’s mother stated that when she returned home with severe stomach pains and she was rushed to the Ikorodu General Hospital, where a surgery was performed but she eventually died after the surgery.
Having been found by Police, he was subsequently charged before the Yaba Magistrates Court for murder, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
The prosecutor, Haruna Magaji, told the Court that the defendant committed the crime on November 1, 2022, and the offence contravenes and is punishable under Sections 147 and 224(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.
The charge read in part, “That you, Ayomide Adewale, on November 1, 2022, around 6.05pm at Gospel Street, Mashalashi, Alagbado, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District did cause the death of one Hannah Eniku by giving her concoction with intent to terminate her pregnancy and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 224(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015″.
However, the Court did not take his plea when he was arraigned following a motion moved by the prosecutor, Magaji, asking the Court to remand the defendant pending legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP).
The Presiding Magistrate, O.Y. Adefope, ordered his remand in custody pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the file and send it to the DPP.
The matter was adjourned while the defendant was remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
