Police operatives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command have been commended for foiling attempt by a 25-year old street hawker to jump into the lagoon due to frustration.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the street hawker, Rabiu Nafiu, went to the lagoon to commit suicide by attempting to jump through the bridge around 8.00am on Tuesday, 16th May, 2023.
However, Nafiu did not succeed in his attempt to jump into the lagoon as the RRS operatives, who were on routine monitoring in the area, saw Nafiu, who on sighting the officers approaching him, warned them not to restrain him from jumping.
But the officers managed to calm him down professionally before getting him off the edge of the bridge and rescued him. They then took him away from the bridge to a protective custody for interrogation over his conduct.
During interrogation, Nafiu was said to have told the Police that he was tired of life as a result of frustration and wanted to end his life.
He was said to have told the Police that he had tried all manner of businesses and they failed before he started hawking, yet he could not feed well or take care of his family challenges.
However, the Police found him culpable for attempting suicide, which attracts several years of imprisonment.
He has been transferred to RRS Headquarters on the instruction of the Commander RRS, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi and may likely be prosecuted for the alleged offence after the conclusion of investigations by the Police.
