A 29-year old man, Promise Godwin, has been sentenced in Lagos State to three years imprisonment without an option fine for battering his biological mother, Roseline Godwin, for attempting to prevent him from stealing.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.K. Dosumu of the Ejigbo Magistrate Court, who found him guilty of assault, burglary and stealing.
The convict, Promise, was arrested after he burgled his father’s house at Fakoya Street, by Agric Road, Egan area of Lagos and stole a power generating set and televisions set.
However, while he made attempt to escape, his mother accosted him and attempted to prevent him from cartng away the items. He then attacked, inflicted injury on her with fist blows and she fell down before he escaped.
The matter was reported to the Police at Igando Division. He was trailed, eventually arrested and subsequently charged before the Court on three counts charges.
He pleaded guilty when he was arraigned.
The prosecutor, Inspector Simeon Njue, then presented the facts of the matter and asked the Court to sentence him accordingly to serve as deterrent to others who might want to commit similar crime in future.
Thus, the Court found him guilty as charged and he was sentenced to two years on the case of assault and six months each on burglary and stealing. He was taken into custody at the Correctional Centre at Kirikiri town, where he will serve his prison term.
However, the Court directed that the count charge will run concurrently, which means that Promise will spend the next two years in the prison for the offence he committed.
