Count Me Out Of Tenure Extension At Delta Sports Commission- Tonobok Okowa

Posted on September 26, 2023

Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Chief Tonobok Okowa, has stated that he has no wish for his tenure to be extended nor be returned.

Okowa made the clarification following a publication in which some athletes and officials of Team Delta were quoted to have called for him to be retained for about two more years after the expiration of his tenure at about January 2024.

Reacting to the publication, Okowa pointed out that the call was unnecessary as he has no interest in continuing after his tenure, moreover, the state has an established process for the management and administration of the commission which he believes should be maintained.

“First of all, I have no interest in remaining as Chairman of the Commission after my tenure, whether by extension or reappointment.

“I believe I have offered my best and will do so till the end of my tenure, after which the mantle should go to another hand. People were before me and people would also have to come after me, possibly with new ideas to improve on what I would have done. That is the way it goes.

Secondly, there is an establishing law of the Delta State Sports Commission with definition of membership and tenure. It states clearly that it shall be two tenures of four years each. That is the law and I believe it should be maintained.

“Notwithstanding, I will a member of the Delta State sports family and will continue to support in necessary and possible ways.”
