Youth Party has asked the Federal Government to publicize measures being taken to forestall recurrence of the recent flooding in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Party in a statement issued by its
National Publicity Secretary, Ayodele Adio said the incident was due to lack of maintenance culture in the country, and urged both the State and Federal Government to come up with solution to address the suffering of the people.

On September 9, 2024, a disastrous flooding overwhelmed Maiduguri, following the rupture of Alau Dam.

During the incident, roads were washed away, houses submerged, animals in the zoo were lost and even prisoners at the correctional centre escaped.

However, Youth Party in its statement said the usual failure of the government to maintain its infrastructure was responsible for the disaster.

While, the Party sympathies with the victims and the people of Maiduguri in general, it urged the government to come up with quick intervention and carry the people along in.its implementation.

The Party said the collapse of the dam was completely avoidable adding that the incident represents failure in governance at all levels since the floods had hitherto been predicted by the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) yet no concrete preemptively actions or flood management plan was put in place to safeguard life and property.

The Party said, Nigerians are tired of government excuses and futile attempt to fortify the damaged dam.

The statement added that while government officials have promised to rehabilitate or reconstruct the dam, Nigerians are more interested in seeing fulfilment of promises.

“We call on all the government agencies responsible for providing quick intervention in times of such emergencies to swing into action for the sake of the affected people.”
