Zonal Elimination Day One: Team Lagos’ Results Excite DG Fatodu

Posted on February 25, 2025

The Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr Lekan Fatodu, has described the performance of Team Lagos in the ongoing Gateway Games 2025 Southwest Zonal Elimination holding in Ibadan, Oyo State, as a result of consistency and unrelenting preparation which the athletes were exposed to long before the commencement of the zonal tournament.

Team Lagos are competing in the ball games at the zonal qualifying tournament ahead of the National Sports Festival, which will be held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

According to Fatodu, the first day of the southwest zonal elimination has so “engaging and spirited in terms of energy our athletes put into their matches.

“From handball to basketball, particularly the female team, as well as football, our athletes have demonstrated exceptional capacity and dominance over their opponents in all the games played in the first day of the zonal qualifiers.
I think it’s a good one for Lagos State.

“The results we got on the first day made us optimistic that at the end of the day we will come out victorious overall.

“We are not in any way in doubt that our athletes will put up a good fight to secure tickets for the state.

“I based my optimism on the ground that all the necessary needs of the athletes were adequately provided for them, thanks to our amiable sports loving Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“The Governor has always been there for us. We have also mobilised all our management team to Ibadan to give moral support to the athletes. I can say that our athletes are motivated and encouraged. They are happy to see the massive presence of the management staff of the commission on the ground here in Ibadan,” Fatodu said.

The DG praised the organization of the zonal elimination, adding that the hospitality, the facilities, the environment and the conduct of fans and supporters have been really great.

” We give them big kudos for hosting the southwest zonal elimination for the National Sports Festival,” he said.
