How WIMA Nigeria Is Accelerating Action for Women In Nigerian Agriculture

In Nigeria and for the longest time in our history, women have been the backbone of agriculture.

Yet despite their critical role, they face signicant challenges—ranging from limited access to modern farming tools to systemic barriers that impede productivity and economic empowerment.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) puts it more clearly when it reported that women in many sub-Saharan African countries make up 70–90% of the agricultural labor force, but have access to only a fraction of the resources available to men.

Mechanized farming or agriculture, which is simply using modern powered equipment instead of animals or human labor, has long evolved the practice of farming, an evolution that women farmers should not be denied.

Access to tractors, modern equipment, and ecient tools can dramatically reduce labor intensity, increase yields, and open doors to new agricultural techniques for women who are eager to transform their farms into thriving businesses.

One initiative moving the needle in this direction is WIMA Nigeria, a for-women association established in 2019 to provide women access to mechanized farming tools, training and resources, especially Northern Nigerian women.

It is also the only establishment doing this in the country. The association is building a supportive network for women who are passionate about agriculture, oering both practical farming support and investment opportunities.

As we honour women and call for a more intentional pursuit towards equity under the theme ‘Accelerate Action’ this year, missions like WIMA Nigeria’s resonate louder than ever.

It reminds us that real change happens when we move beyond words and invest in practical solutions, especially for underrepresented women, like women farmers. Equipping women with mechanized tools and a platform for agricultural investment is not only a matter of fairness—it’s a strategic step toward a more sustainable and inclusive future.
