Navigating The Midlife And Adolescent Crisis: A Systemic Leadership Challenge In Africa
EMMANUEL PETER ADAYEHI
This paper explores the concept of adulicent crisis in Nigerian leadership, tracing its historical roots and impact on national development. The adulicent crisis refers to a phase of uncertainty and indecisiveness in decision-making, often influenced by external factors such as peer pressure, family expectations, and societal norms.
Introduction
In Africa, particularly Nigeria, individuals face significant challenges during what can be termed a midlife crisis or “adolescent crisis,” impacting their decision-making regarding marriage, careers, and societal expectations. This research focuses on the periods from 1985-1990, 1990-1999, and 1999 to the present, tracing the evolution of leadership and societal norms.
In Nigeria over the years decision-making particularly among young military officers and politicians have been characterized by systemic failure and to a large extent promoting unsustainable development and incoherent leadership. This trajectory phenomenon has led to lack of proper leadership experience, skills, and knowledge necessary to effectively lead a nation. The consequences of these decisions have been far-reaching, resulting in corruption, polygamy, and various social deviant behaviors.
Before colonialism, indigenous African systems promoted and sustained cultural values, norms, and ethical behavior. These systems created a regulatory environment that fostered equity and effectiveness, even in the face of adversity.
The Midlife Crisis in Nigeria
The notion of midlife crisis in Nigeria, or the adolescent crisis, highlights the limitations imposed by age-grade systems. During military governance, particularly from 1985 onward, legislation lacked focus on national cohesion. Young leaders, often in their mid-30s, displayed arrogance and a lack of respect for established authorities, as they prioritized personal wealth accumulation over societal responsibilities. This military regime, characterized by leaders in their midlife crisis, lacked the necessary experience and skills for effective governance, leading to widespread corruption.
By 1990, the military’s violation of constitutional norms saw decisions imposed by decrees from youthful leaders, resulting in a rise in cross-cultural marriages and subsequent divorces among young military officers. This instability fostered a culture of coups and unrest. The advent of social media in 2000 further amplified these issues, exposing a generation of individuals who often exhibited arrogant and disrespectful behavior, expecting immediate recognition and success.
The Influence of Generation Z
Children born into the Millennium, particularly Generation Z, have developed a strong sense of entitlement, often influenced by contemporary icons in music and film. Unlike earlier icons who represented hard work and dedication, many of today’s figures live flamboyantly, contributing to a societal shift in values.
Polygamy and Its Consequences
The researcher highlights the period from 1988-1992, during which military officers deployed abroad, often bringing home spouses from foreign nations. This has contributed to rising polygamy in regions like North West Nigeria, leading to family sizes that challenge national planning and moral values. The outcomes of these family dynamics have been detrimental, fostering social unrest and contributing to conflicts, militancy, and criminal behavior across Nigeria.
Leadership Implications
1. Workplace Challenges: Individuals may struggle with job responsibilities or teamwork due to indecision.
2. Mental Health: Prolonged indecision can lead to anxiety, stress, and a sense of unfulfillment.
3. Adolescent crisis has also affected leadership styles in Africa. Notable figures like Late Captain Thomas Sankara and Capyain Ibrahim Traoré exemplify the impact of youthful leadership on national stability. The influence of Western ideologies has further complicated these dynamics, calling for a reassessment of leadership strategies.
Conclusion and Recommendations
To address the adolescent crisis effectively, we must:
– Promote Counseling Services: Offering professional guidance can assist young individuals in making informed decisions.
– Establish Peer Support Groups: Creating spaces for shared experiences can foster community and support.
– Enhance Skills Development: Programs focused on decision-making and self-awareness can empower the youth.
By understanding the adolescent crisis, we can better support young people in navigating their futures with confidence.
Appreciation
The researcher’s dedication to exploring these complex issues offers valuable insights into the societal challenges faced in Nigeria and Africa at large. Their work is crucial in advocating for systemic changes that can positively influence future generations.
