The family of the late Barrister Olusegun Awolowo Jr., respected public figure and grandson of late sage, Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, has announced a well laid out three-day burial program in honour of the departed one.

Awolowo, aged 62, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2025 and his death was announced in a statement by his family.

Known for his contributions to humanity and public service, the 62-year-old will be honored not just for his legacy, but for the values his family seeks to celebrate through each event.

According to the funeral order, a Night of Tributes scheduled for Monday, December 1 at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos will kickstarts the event. Invited guests are to wear white or silver colours chosen to signify honour and purity.

This opening ceremony promises an intimate gathering of family, friends, and admirers sharing stories of his life and achievements.

On Wednesday, December 3, a Wake-Keeping Service will also hold at Harbour Point. Guests are encouraged to appear in shades of green, representing renewal, peace, and hope for eternal rest. A thoughtful nod to the cycle of life and remembrance of the friend of many who carried a legendary name without arrogance.

The final farewell comes on Friday, December 5, with a Funeral Service at Our Saviour’s Church, Ikoyi, Lagos. The designated shades of blue reflect calm, dignity, and the serenity of the final journey.

With prominent dignitaries, colleagues, and citizens expected to attend, Lagos is set to witness a funeral that blends tradition, elegance, and heartfelt remembrance.

Late Segun Awolowo served diligently as the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council from 2013 to 2021, standing as the longest serving executive director of the agency in history.

Born on 27 September 1963, Awolowo spent his early years under the care of Prof. and Mrs. Oyediran, where he began his education at Mayhill Convent School.

He attended the school alongside Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, before proceeding to Igbobi College, Yaba, Lagos State, and later completing his secondary school education at Government College, Ibadan.

He studied law at Ogun State University (now Olabisi Onabanjo University), Ago Iwoye, and earned an LLB degree. Called to the Nigerian Bar in December 1989, he began a legal career that saw him work with notable firms including Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co.

Awolowo’s public service journey began under President Olusegun Obasanjo as Special Assistant on Traditional Institutions, Legal Due Diligence and Legal Matters.

Under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, he also served as Special Assistant and worked within the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), Abuja, as Secretary for Social Development and Secretary of Transport between 2007 and 2011.

He briefly returned to private legal practice after the 2011 elections until November 2013, when President Goodluck Jonathan appointed him Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council.
