Mother, 21, Arraigned For Strangling Her One-Month Old Baby

A 21-year-old mother, Doowuese Paul, has been arrested and charged in Benue State for allegedly killing her one-month old baby boy, Terhile Chupa, by strangling him to death..
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Doowuese, who resides at No. 113, Ikyese Street, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, has been charged for culpable homicide before the Makurdi Chief Magistrate Court over her alleged conduct.
The prosecuting police officer, Friday Kanshio, informed the court that the matter was transferred from the ‘B’ Division Police Station, Gboko, to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Makurdi for further investigation.
The prosecutor told the Court that on 14th December, 2025, the Gboko Police Division received a distress call from an unidentified person at Kajo ‘C’ Street, Gboko East, reporting that the defendant had strangled her one-month-old baby to death in the house of a friend, Ashiekaa Shieminenge.
The defendant was subsequently arrested and detained for interrogation over her alleged conduct and was found culpable after thorough interrogation for her conduct and consequently charged before the Court.
The prosecutor stated that the alleged offence contravened Section 222 of the Penal Code Law of Benue, 2004, which attracts several years of imprisonment or life imprisonment.
The Presiding Magistrate, Regina Alashi, did not take her plea due to lack of jurisdiction. She rather ordered that the defendant be remanded at the correctional centre in Makurdi pending the outcome of DPP’s legal advice over the matter.
The matter was adjourned till 12th March, 2026, for mention for the report of DPP’s advice to be available, which will determine if the matter will be transferred to the High Court or not over jurisdiction.
