Man, 50, Arraigned For Breaking Wife’s Jaw During Public Brawl

A 50-year old man, Evans Stephen Uchenna, has displayed his boxing prowess on his estranged wife, Ndidi-Amaka Stephens, by breaking her jaw with fist blows during a public brawl in Lagos State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened on 12th January, 2024, at Olusesi Street, West Bridge Estate 3, by Lekki Conservation Centre Lekki, Lagos, where they reside.
The cause of the fight was not disclosed by the Police. It was alleged that the man hit his wife with fist blows, which caused her harm on her jaw.
The complainant was rushed to an undisclosed hospital for treatment and the matter was as well reported to the Police at the Gender Section of the State Command. The Police operatives moved into action, arrested and detained the man for interrogation over his alleged conduct against the complainant.
After thorough interrogation, the Police found him culpable and charged him before the Ogba Magistrate Court for the alleged offence which attracts several years of imprisonment.
The charge read:
“That you, John Evans Stephen Uchenna ‘m’, on the 12th day of January, 2024, at about 1130am, at No. 20 Olusesi Street, West Bridge Estate 3, by Lekki Conservation Centre Lekki, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did assault one Ndidi-Amaka Stephens by hitting her with fist blows, which cause her harm on her jaw and thereby committed an ofience punishable under Section 173 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2015.”
However, he pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Mr. Lucky Ihiehie, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. Mrs. M.O. Tanimola, granted him bail with sureties, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
