What Will African Black Tie Look Like At The Headies 18 In Toronto?

Posted on August 31, 2026

As The Headies heads to Toronto, its fashion direction is asking a provocative question: what happens when African heritage becomes the language of black tie?

The red carpet at an awards ceremony is rarely just about who wore the most expensive dress or whose suit generated the most conversation. At its best, fashion on the red carpet tells us something about the moment, where culture is moving, what designers are interested in and how artists want to be seen.

That makes the fashion direction for the 18th edition of The Headies particularly interesting. As the awards move to Toronto under the theme “Africa to the World,” the fashion story is being developed around “Heritage Noir: The Icons,” a concept led by fashion and creative director Yolanda Okereke. At its centre is a question that sounds simple but carries considerable weight: what if black tie did not mean European?

Rather than choosing between conventional Western formalwear and traditional African dress, the concept explores what happens in between, bringing African textiles, craftsmanship and silhouettes into contemporary formalwear.

From dramatic agbadas to sculptural gowns, the Toronto red carpet is set to offer a distinctly African interpretation of dressing up.

Here are some of the looks to watch for.

The Agbada, Reimagined

The familiar agbada gets a red carpet treatment, with dramatic proportions and elevated styling. The African Tuxedo and Modern Native offer other interpretations, bringing indigenous fabrics, tailoring and handwork into contemporary formalwear.

Sculptural Gowns and African Royalty

For the women, expect Aso-oke corsetry, sculptural wrappers, dramatic trains, beaded gowns, capes and modern gele, paired with statement African jewellery.

The mood is less traditional occasionwear and more African royalty on a global red carpet.

The Fabrics Take the Spotlight

Aso-oke, adire, brocade and velvet bring texture and heritage to the looks, while beads and metallic details add a sense of evening glamour.

The emphasis is as much on the craft behind the clothes as the finished look.

Black Tie, Rewritten

The colour palette moves through black, ivory, jewel tones, bronze and gold, creating a visual thread across the different looks without making the red carpet feel uniform. Accessories become part of the statement too, from beads and caps to sculptural jewellery, hand fans, cuffs and walking sticks.

The Rebel. The Joy. The King.

The fashion story also looks back at three musical icons through three distinct visual interpretations.

The Rebel, inspired by Fela Kuti, brings layered prints, earth tones, red, black and ochre.

The Joy, inspired by Bright Chimezie, embraces vivid colour and playful patterns, while The King, inspired by King Sunny Ade, takes a more regal approach through Yoruba references and ceremonial details.

Together, the concepts offer different ideas of what African style can be: rebellious, joyful, regal, dramatic and contemporary.

For The Headies 18, the question is no longer whether African fashion belongs on the global red carpet, but what the red carpet looks like when Africa gets to define the dress code.
