BAT Nigeria Marks World Cleanup Day with Employee-Led Clean-Up At Ibadan Factory

British American Tobacco Nigeria Limited (BAT Nigeria) marked World Cleanup Day with an employee-led clean-up exercise at its Ibadan manufacturing facility, as the Company continued to translate its environmental commitments into practical action.

Led by Alex Genehr, Factory Director (Operations), the exercise brought together employees who worked across the factory’s external environment and neighbouring areas, extending from Tobacco Road to Eagle Flour Mill, to clean and maintain key public spaces around the facility.

The activity coincided with the 2026 global observance of World Cleanup Day, which the United Nations says is focused on practical action towards addressing waste and building cleaner, more resource-efficient communities.

This year’s global theme is “From Clean Plates to Clean Cities.”

Speaking during the exercise, Genehr said environmental responsibility begins with everyday actions and shared ownership.

“World Cleanup Day gives us an opportunity to turn our commitment to sustainability into practical action. Keeping our workplace clean is a collective responsibility, and today’s exercise reinforces the importance of every employee playing a part in protecting our environment,” he said.

He added that the initiative complemented the environmental practices already embedded in the operations of the Ibadan factory.

“Sustainability is not only about major investments and long-term targets. It is also about the everyday choices we make, how we manage our resources and how we maintain the environment in which we work.”

BAT Nigeria’s Ibadan facility has demonstrated significant progress in environmental sustainability, maintaining Zero Waste to Landfill status since 2021 and consistently sustaining a 99 percent waste recycling rate year after year since 2024.

The factory has also advanced its decarbonisation agenda through the transitioning from diesel-powered generation to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and the installation of a 1.4 MW solar power system.

In water stewardship, the facility is certified under the Alliance for Water Stewardship (AWS) Standard and has achieved over 45% reduction in freshwater withdrawal against baseline of 2020.

The site operates a closed-loop wastewater treatment and storage system that enables the recycling and reuse of treated effluent, supporting improved water efficiency, water resilience, and circular water management across the factory, with zero wastewater discharge to the environment.

The clean-up exercise reinforces BAT Nigeria’s broader commitment to responsible environmental stewardship, demonstrating that meaningful sustainability is driven not only by investments in technology and infrastructure, but also by the collective actions of employees and the communities around its operations.

By combining measurable environmental improvements at its Ibadan facility with practical initiatives that promote cleaner shared spaces, the Company continues to support a culture of environmental responsibility and resource efficiency.
