Alleged Fraud: Court Grants Delta Senator Bail On Self-Recognisance

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Friday granted bail on self-recognisance to Peter Nwaoboshi, a senator representing Delta North in the National Assembly who was charged for alleged N322 million fraud.

The court however ordered the Senator to provide two sureties who must furnish it with bond of N50 million each.

The trial judge, justice Mohammed Idris also ordered Nwaoboshi to deposit his international passport and that he must not travel out of the court’s jurisdiction without notifying the court.

He was given 72 hours to meet the bail conditions.

In the charge against the senator, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had alleged that the N322 million out of N806 million, formed parts of proceeds of crime which the senator used in purchasing property described as ‘Guinea House’, Marine Road, Apapa-Lagos.

The Senator alongside his two companies, Golden Touch Construction Projects Limited and Summing Electricals Limited, were arraigned before the court on Wednesday, by the EFCC, on a two count-charge, bordering on fraud.

He was alleged to have committed the offence between May and June 2014.

The offences according to the prosecution led by Salisu Abubakar, are contrary to sections 15(2)(d) and 18 (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, (as amended) and punishable under section punishable under section 15(3) and 15(2)(d) of the same Act.

The accused had however pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The matter was adjourned till June 13 and 20 for trial.
