The bottle looks original. The label is perfect. The seal is intact. But inside is poison that can blind you in 24 hours, shut down your kidneys in 48 hours, and kill you in 72 hours.
This is the reality of fake drinks now flooding Lagos markets, bars, hotels, supermarkets and even top lounges on the Island.
PMEXPRESS investigation reveals that fake drinks are no longer a Cemetery Market, Aba problem. It is now a Lagos Trade Fair, Oke-Arin, Mushin, and Lekki problem.
Latest data from NAFDAC Directorate of Investigation and Enforcement obtained by P.M.EXPRESS showed the enormity:
– 5,542 enforcement activities* between January and August 2026
– 213 raids conducted nationwide
– 821 product seizure entries – drinks accounted for 215, second only to cosmetics
– 179 premises sealed, 52 arrests
– N22.73 billion worth of unsafe products destroyed
– N5.3 billion destroyed in ONE WEEK in October 2026 alone- N2bn at Trade Fair Lagos, N700m packaging at Aba, N2.6bn at Port Harcourt.
In October 13, 2026 operation at Zamfara Plaza, BBA Trade Fair Complex, Ojo, Lagos, NAFDAC uncovered over 20 illegal stores blending counterfeit whisky, brandy, vodka and wine valued at over N2bn.
Officials met suspects blending ethanol and unsafe chemicals, refilling bottles of popular premium brands, revalidating expired drinks for resale.
In Aba, five shops at Old Court Road Market were raided with fake labels, corks and packaging worth N700m. At Omenazu Street, 200-liter drums of ethanol, tree bark, dirty sieves and sealing machines worth N500m were seized.
NAFDAC DG Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said more than 50% of court victories secured by NAFDAC are now from fake drinks.
CAUSES – WHY FAKE DRINKS BOOMED
1. High Cost of Original Drinks: Inflation pushed price of genuine Hennessy, Jack Daniels, Jameson from N15k to N45k. Counterfeiters fill gap with N7k fake.
2. Weak Distribution Control: Original manufacturers have weak tracking. Once bottle leaves factory, anyone can refill it.
3. Greed and Poverty: Unemployed youths in Lagos and Aba see it as quick money. A N200 bottle of industrial methanol can produce 10 bottles of fake gin sold at N5k each = N50k profit.
4. Expired Drinks Revalidation: NAFDAC says suspects now revalidate expired drinks by changing expiry dates – chemical changes in expired drinks increase toxicity 31c5
5. Sachet Alcohol Ban Loophole: After FG banned alcohol in sachets below 200ml, counterfeiters moved to refilling small bottles.
HEALTH IMPLICATIONS – IT IS NOT JUST HANGOVER
Medical experts say fake drinks are now a weapon of mass destruction.
a) Methanol Poisoning – The Killer Chemical:
Authentic spirits use regulated ethanol. Fake operators use industrial-grade methanol or unrefined ethanol.
According to WHO, methanol even in small amounts can cause blindness, liver failure, kidney damage and death. It is metabolized to formic acid which attacks optic nerve. 31c5
b) Instant Blindness: Methanol attacks optic nerve directly, leading to permanent blindness within 24-48 hours. 72f2
c) Kidney and Liver Shutdown: Built-up toxins trigger acute kidney shutdown, sudden liver collapse and massive metabolic shock. NMA Ondo chairman Dr Roland Arohunmolase raised alarm that young people in their 20s now develop liver cirrhosis and kidney failure from fake drinks. a5074659
d) Cancer: Fake products account for about 4.7% of total cancer cases in Nigeria. 72f2
e) Dialysis Crisis:* Dialysis centres are now congested with young persons whose kidneys and liver have been destroyed by toxins they unknowingly ingested during ordinary social outings. Popular video director TG Omori revealed fake drinks left him hospitalised needing kidney transplant. 72f2
DATA OF DEATHS:
– Ondo State 2015: 33 deaths from methanol-laced gin
– Ondo State 2026: 49 deaths, 182 casualties in one incident
– Kano 2021: 10 deaths, 50 kidney injuries from fake drinks
– Odigbo and Irele, Ondo: 48 deaths recalled by NMA
– Port Harcourt: 3 deaths from counterfeit ogogoro adulterated with methanol 72f2465931c5
SOLUTIONS – HOW TO STAY SAFE
For Consumers – NAFDAC Advice:
1. Buy from reputable outlets only, not roadside or party vendors
2. Check NAFDAC registration number via Greenbook
3. Examine bottle seals, corks, labels – fake has rough edges, wrong spelling
4. Avoid drinks that are too cheap – if Hennessy is N8k instead of N35k, it is fake
5. Report via 0800-1-NAFDAC (0800-1-623322) 31c5
For Government – NMA Recommendation:
1. Aggressive crackdown with FCCPC, unannounced inspections of markets, supermarkets, hotels, bars
2. Tamper-proof holographic seals, QR codes and alphanumeric tracking
3. Special court for fake product cases – NAFDAC already secured 64 convictions
4. Ban on reuse of bottles – mandate crushing of empty premium bottles 46598ce2215f
For P.M.EXPRESS Readers:
If you suspect you drank fake drink – nausea, vomiting, blurred vision, abdominal pain – rush to hospital immediately. Do not wait. Methanol antidote works only within hours.
The bottle may look original, but your kidney knows the difference.
