For the first time in history, Nigeria’s Flamingos are going to the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final.

It is a historic breakthrough for Nigerian women’s football and a proud moment for the nation.

On November 4, 2026, the young footballers defeated Brazil 3-1 in Morocco to accomplish what no previous Nigerian U-17 women’s team had achieved.

Nigeria has also become the first African nation to reach the final of the competition.

Nigeria’s previous best performance came in 2022, when the Flamingos finished third in India.

This new generation has now gone one step further.

After a goalless first half against Brazil, Queen Joseph broke the deadlock in the 56th minute. Awawu Bashiru followed with two goals in the 71st and 80th minutes, putting Nigeria firmly in control before Brazil scored a late consolation.

These young women have already guaranteed Nigeria at least a silver medal. But their ambition, understandably, is gold.

They will face Japan on Saturday, November 7, 2026, with an opportunity to become world champions.

Reaching a FIFA World Cup final is an extraordinary achievement that deserves national recognition. Behind this historic qualification are years of preparation, personal sacrifices, discipline, determination and the courage to represent Nigeria on the world stage.

These young women have already made history. Whatever happens in the final, their achievement deserves to be celebrated. And now, they have the opportunity to go one step further and bring home the ultimate prize.

For the first time, Nigeria’s Flamingos will compete for the ultimate prize in the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. The nation will be watching, hoping these remarkable young women can complete their historic journey with the trophy.

The Flamingos’ success is a reminder that sporting excellence is a collective effort.

The players deserve the greatest applause. Their coaches, technical staff, families and everyone contributing to their development also deserve appreciation.

Likewise, government commitments that strengthen Nigerian sports should be acknowledged fairly, regardless of who occupies the presidency.

Credible journalism requires us to give credit where it is due, just as it requires us to hold those in authority accountable. Recognition and accountability are not mutually exclusive.

The recognition of our national football teams should never be determined by political affiliation, but by their performance, sacrifices and achievements.

This historic qualification belongs to the Flamingos and to Nigeria.

This is about Nigerian sports. Let us celebrate our athletes, examine the facts and give credit where it is due, without turning every sporting achievement into a political contest.
