Hundreds of cyclists have taken part in the World Naked Bike Ride in an annual protest aimed at celebrating the human body and campaigning against dependency on cars.

The cycle around London is part of a global event with others scheduled in Tokyo and Sydney.

The World Naked Bike Ride campaigns for safety regulations for cyclists and raises awareness on the world’s dependency on oil.

On its Facebook page, the World Naked Bike Ride London says it is “fun, legal and making the world a better place for everyone.”

It added: “The ride demonstrates the vulnerability of cyclists and is a protest against car culture. WNBR is a worldwide campaign with a number of linked themes.

“Its objectives are to protest against the global dependency on oil, curb car culture, obtain real rights for cyclists, demonstrate the vulnerability of cyclists on city streets and celebrate body freedom.”

Participants were able to choose between a short ride or a longer one with all routes eventually merging onto a circuit that took cyclists from Westminster Bridge to the finishing point at Hyde Park.

Riders could choose whether to bike in the buff with those taking part encouraged to decorate themselves in body paint or wear fancy dress.
