CYRIACUS IZUEKWE

A 56-year old woman, Adetola Oladunni has landed in trouble after she stood surety for a man, Kayode Popoola who allegedly was involved in a criminal fraud worth over N7 million at a police station in Lagos State, Nigeria.
P.M.EXPRESS gathered that Popoola, the accused whom Oladunni stood as surety for, has absconded and she has been asked to pay the money involved in the fraud case, which she has been unable to do. Consequently, she was arrested and charged before a Lagos court for perversion of justice and to forfeit the money in question to the government.
Oladunni’s trouble started after she went to Ilasamaja police division to stand as surety for Popoola (now on the run) who was alleged to have defrauded a woman, Mrs. Bose Medureni to the tune of N7 million.
When Popoola was arrested and detained at the station and was to be taken to court, Oladunni went there and effected his release, while the matter was to be settled out of police. She also signed a bond that she will produce him at any time the police asked her to produce him.
However, when Popoola was released from custody, he absconded and relocated to an unknown location and since then, Oladunni have not seen him.
When the police later asked Oladunni to produce Popoola as she promised, she told the police that he had absconded and did not know his where about.
The police then asked her to provide the money since she was the surety.
When she could not, she was promptly arrested and charged to court with the alleged offence.
At the Isolo Magistrate’s court where she was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty.
The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.O Adedayo granted her bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.
She was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition.
The matter was further adjourned till 5 October 2016.
