A veteran crime reporter with P. M.EXPRESS, Cyriacus Izuekwe, escaped death by whiskers after a hit and run driver ran on him; he managed to escape but sustained injuries.
The incident happened at Round-about Bus Stop, Akowonjo area of Lagos and he was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.
The incident took place after he had received several threats from an unknown caller over publications carried by the tabloid recently. It was not certain if it was an attempt to eliminate him by unknown persons, who might have been offended over his several reports on crime in the State.
Narrating what happened, Izuekwe said he woke up in the morning, got prepared to go to work at Ikeja and got on a tricycle. He dropped at Akowonjo Round-about hoping connect Ikeja from there for an assignment.
However, due to the usual morning rush, it took some time before he could get a cab or bus. While still standing, he noticed a Nissan car was coming his direction but he did not suspect anything funny. He thought that the driver wanted to pick up passengers but he rather accelerated, hit him and drove off probably thinking that he had killed him. He managed to escape, fell by the side and had injuries on his body but could not identify the driver that made the attempt on his life.
Izuekwe did not rule out the possibility of attack by unknown persons but insisted that such will not deter him from accurate reportage of crimes and events across the State and country. He expressed gratitude to God for sparing his life.
As at the time of filing this report, he is still in the hospital receiving treatment over the ugly incident.
