A heavily pregnant wife of a convicted fake lawyer, Olajide Soyinka burst into tears as her husband was sentenced to nine years, three month in prison by an Ijede Magistrate s’ Court in Ikorodu, Lagos on Thursday.

The young wife carrying her first pregnancy was crying profusely as her husband was been led out of the court to the waiting prison van.

Olajide and the wife (name unknown) got married recently, and were expecting their first child together when the hubby, a law school drop out, got enmeshed in the fraud saga.

The 34-year-old convict pleaded guilty to four of the five-count charge of impersonation, stealing, forgery, obtaining by false pretence and possession fraudulent documents levelled against him.

The prosecutor, Insp Aminu Isaac, had told the court that Soyinka, a resident of Rofo Community, Odongunyan in Ikorodu, obtained the sum of N550,000 from one Nwokeyi Lukman.

“He took the money in December 2016 under the pretext of procuring a divorce certificate for the complainant.

“He also impersonated members of the Nigeria Bar Association and procured a fake divorce certificate for the complainant.

“The complainant discovered that the document was a fake when he tried to verify its authenticity from the Lagos State Judiciary.

“So, Lukman alerted the police who then arrested Soyinka.

“In the course of investigation, the police searched the defendant’s house and found fake documents and complementary cards,” Isaac said.

He said that the items found revealed that Soyinka had falsely represented himself as a Legal Associate.

The Magistrate, Mr R.O. Davies in his ruling, sentenced Soyinka to three years in prison for each of the third, fourth and fifth-count charge and three months for the first-count charge.

The second-count charge of stealing was struck out.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened sections 312, 374, 363 (1) and 318 (1) of the Criminal Code Laws of Lagos State 2011.
