YESS: Demonstrating A Paradigm Shift

Posted on May 18, 2021

Yesterday was another opportunity to add some bricks of hard worked effort to the ongoing rebuilding process of Anambra’s political value system. It was not unusual neither was it unexpected to see the glaring disbelief from a section of young people who, up until now, are unable to understand the event of yesterday.

To some, it was another politically choreographed outing, wherein young people were assembled to act a script. To some others, the outing was not just necessary, why should young people galvanize such massive support for politics, “don’t they know that politics is an opportunity to TAKE and not to give?” Phewww! Too many familiar distortions to what should be the norm.

Truth is, accountability as a key feature of public governance must be earned. This is why citizenship comes with the “Rights and Duties” identikit.  While we all have a right to seek accountability and good governance, there is an all important duty expected of us to give same out before a right can be justiciable.

I can go on and on to present factual examples of this basic studies in civics practicalised by the YESS Anambra group. At the core of the citizen-government relationship is measurable purposefulness. Sadly, according to Soludo, “this has, over the years been replaced by opportunism, fuelled by a debilitating entitlement mentality”. Simply put, a system where nothing is imputed, yet so much is expected in output. No thanks to the rentier system occasioned by a thoughtless dependence on oil revenues.

YESS Anambra has heralded a political rebirth process that will gradually redefine political participation amongst young people. Yes, it is possible, if you work diligently at it.
