Agent, 42, Sent To Prison For Swindling Landlady N2.5m Over House Rent

A 42-year old agent, Adeniyi Jimoh, has been arrested and charged in Lagos State for allegedly swindling a landlady, Ogunjimakin Omolade, to the tune of N2.4m under false pretence of renting out seven 2-bedroom flats and bolting away with the money.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the incident happened at Adisa Oyerinmade Street off Community Road, Ijegun area of Lagos, where the house is located.
According to the Police, the landlady asked the agent to rent out the flats, which he did but converted the money to his own use and did not remit the money to the landlady.
The matter was reported to the Police at Area M Command, Idimu. The Police operatives moved into action, eventually arrested the agent and detained him at the Command for interrogation.
During interrogation, the agent admitted to have rented out the apartments, collected the money but had spent it as such had no money to refund the complainant.
The Police found him culpable and consequently charged him before the Ejigbo Magistrate Court for the alleged conspiracy and stealing under the Criminal Laws of the State.
The charges read:
“That you, Adeniyi Jimoh and others at large on 7th September, 2024 at No. 12 Adisa Oyerinmade Street, off Community Road, Ijegun area of Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial district, did conspire among yourselves to steal the sum of Two million, Four Hundred and sixty thousand Naira (2,460,000), being the property of one Ogunjimakin Omolade of the mentioned address and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 412 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, of Nigeria 2015.”
“That you, Adeniyi Jimoh and others at large on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did fraudulently collect the sum of Two Million Four Hundred and Sixty thousand Naira (N2,460,000.00) under the pretense to rent out (7) two bedroom apartments to each tenant, which belongs to one Ogunjimakin Omolade ‘F’ and thereby committed an offence contrary to the law and punishable under Section 314 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
“That you, Adeniyi Jimoh and others at large on the same date, time, and place in the aforementioned Magisterial District, did steal the sum of Two Million Four Hundred and Sixty thousand Naira (2,460,000.00) and converted it to your own use property of one Ogunjimakin Omolade ‘F’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 287 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2015.”
He pleaded not guilty.
The prosecutor, Supol Benedict Aigbokhan, asked the Court to give a date for hearing since he pleaded not guilty to enable the Police to prove that he actually committed the alleged offence.
The Presiding Magistrate, Mrs. K.A. Ariyo, granted him bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum, who must show evidence of means of livelihood and tax payment while addresses will be verified by the Court.
The matter was adjourned for mention while the defendant was remanded in custody at the correctional center at Kirikiri town, Lagos, pending when he will perfect his bail conditions.
