Members of staff of Ajeromi General Hospital and residents living around the hospital on Wednesday donated free blood, in preparation for the World Blood Donor Day.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the World Blood Donor Day is celebrated globally on June 14 every year in honour of the heroes who regularly donate blood to save the lives.

Dr Gbeminiyi Adesiyan, an anesthetist and the Chairperson, Blood Donation Committee in the hospital urged people to donate blood to save lives of helpless people.

According to her, the donor will have the opportunity to be screened and know his or her health status.

She said that donating blood gives someone the chance to live, be it a relative, friend or the donor.

“Every few seconds, someone, somewhere, needs blood, we all need to do something about this.

“And to save the life of others, the donor is reducing the risk of certain heart diseases and cancers, the donor blood cell production gets stimulated and will even burn calories.

“Let us all join hands and come forward to donate safe blood for all, “she said.

In his remark, the Managing Director of the Hospital, Dr Olufemi Orebanjo, appreciated everyone who participated in the donation and thanked them for the lifesaving gifts.

NAN reports that 34 people donated their blood voluntarily and for free.

Some of the donors included: Dr Babalola Olanrewaju, Chief Matron Okunade Modupe, Mr Tunde Martins and others. (NAN)
