Asisat Oshoala Academy: Nike, Women Win Create Platform For Girl-child In Lagos

Posted on August 11, 2022

The Asisat Oshoala Academy (AOA) has finally kicked off in Lagos.

The football academy is powered by Women Win and Nike, Inc. an American multinational corporation that is engaged in the design, development, manufacturing, and worldwide marketing and sales, footwearapparel, equipment, accessories and services.

The academy, which has admitted 30 students, opens two hours  training for its players Monday, Wednesday and Friday every week.

The training of the students by seasoned coaches is centered on football basics, mentorship and life skills.

The academy, the latest initiative of Asisat Oshoala, five-time African Footballer of the Year and FC Barcelona Femení star, will build upon her mission of providing access to sport and education for young girls in Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Report from the academy shows that the students are in high spirits taking to the tutoring of the resource coaches who have been mobilised to deliver the best and teach the girl-players the basics of football and core values

The program will be complimented with life skills education covering a range of empowerment and rights-based topics. Graduates from the academy will be encouraged to convert their leadership skills to make a positive impact in their respective communities.

The Asisat Oshoala Foundation, established in 2015 is responsible for the day-to-day management of the academy. Women Win, the Amsterdam-based global women’s fund dedicated to advancing girls and women’s rights, is  bringing their expertise to the academy’s development.

As the academy continues with its programs, a project code named SHE will soon be held to reach out to communities in Lagos.

The SHE project, an all-encompassing initiative, is designed as Sports Intervention, Humanitarian Intervention and Educational Intervention program for the targeted communities.

The SHE project will hold in 10 Lagos communities in September this year through the support of Nike and Women Win.

“I have always strived to give back to the girl child in my community and I believe this football academy will provide opportunities for more girls to excel through the combination of sport and education. I want to thank our partners Women Win and Nike for helping bring this platform to life. Together we can go further and achieve a lot more,” Asisat Oshoala said.
