Elon Musk Acquires Lands To Build Starlink Ground Stations Across Nigeria

Posted on August 18, 2024

American billionaire Elon Musk’s internet company, Starlink, has been making significant strides in Nigeria with plans to set up ground stations across the country.

This strategic move is expected to enhance connectivity for millions of Nigerians, marking a major milestone in the country’s internet infrastructure.

Sources familiar with the project said Starlink has acquired approximately 29,000 acres of land in three states—Lagos, Ogun, and Rivers—for the development of these facilities.

The ground stations will be established in key locations including Okun Ajah in Lagos State, Sagamu in Ogun State, and Port Harcourt in Rivers State. Construction is already underway in Okun Ajah, with completion anticipated by the fourth quarter of 2024. The remaining locations are expected to be operational by 2025.

In partnership with Equinix, a leader in data center solutions, Starlink is building these ground stations as part of a broader effort to strengthen its presence in Nigeria.

Equinix entered the Nigerian market in 2022 after acquiring MainOne, a prominent data center and connectivity provider, in a $320 million deal.

The ground stations, also known as Gateways, are essential for Starlink’s satellite-based internet service.

These terrestrial relay stations communicate with Starlink satellites orbiting the Earth, transmitting data between the satellites and the internet backbone on the ground.

By establishing local ground stations, Starlink aims to bypass international data centers, potentially reducing latency and improving internet performance for users in Nigeria.

For Nigerian consumers, this development promises a significant boost in connectivity.

Currently, most network traffic from Nigeria is routed through international data centers, leading to delays and potential bottlenecks.

The new ground stations will streamline this process, offering faster, more reliable internet services for both individual users and businesses.

Starlink entered the Nigerian market in 2022 after securing an Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Additionally, the company obtained a Sales and Installation license and an International Gateway license, the latter allowing it to establish and operate facilities for transmitting international voice, data, and other telecommunication services.

Since its official launch in Nigeria in January 2023, Starlink has rapidly become a key player in the country’s telecom sector. As of the first quarter of 2024, data from the NCC indicated that Starlink had become the third-largest ISP in Nigeria, trailing only Spectranet and FibreOne.

Despite higher costs compared to local ISPs, Starlink has seen a surge in customer numbers, driven by its satellite service’s ability to provide connectivity in areas with poor internet coverage.

With the completion of its ground stations, Starlink is poised to further solidify its position as a major force in Nigeria’s telecom landscape, offering a new standard for internet connectivity across the country.
