In relationships, marriages, and courtships, it is not uncommon for both men and women to experience hurt and trauma. However, it is crucial to find constructive ways to address issues without causing emotional harm. Here are 13 ways to correct your partner without hurting their feelings:
Lower Your Voice: When addressing your partner, avoid shouting. Remember that your partner is not a child. Correction can be done effectively without raising your voice.
Do It in Love: Approach correction with love and compassion. When correction is delivered with genuine care, it fosters understanding and growth. Criticism and condemnation only create negativity.
Don’t Criticize: Instead of criticizing, offer guidance and better alternatives. Criticism focuses on pointing out errors and mistakes, while correction entails providing better options.
Example: Husband A: “What manner of food is this? Is this popcorn or fried rice? I wish I married a wife with better home training who can cook better.”
Husband B: “Sweetheart, this rice is too salty and dry compared to the one you cooked yesterday. I think we should reduce the salt for our health.” Husband B corrects his wife with love rather than criticizing her.
Praise Her for What Is Right: Acknowledge and appreciate your partner’s efforts. Praising her for her accomplishments and good deeds reinforces positive behaviour.
Don’t Correct in Front of Children: Avoid correcting your partner in the presence of your children. Constantly correcting your partner in front of the children can lead to disrespect and strained relationships.
Avoid Public Corrections: Correcting your partner in public can negatively impact their self-esteem and portray you in a negative light. Address issues privately, maintaining respect and dignity.
Avoid Correcting in Anger: Reacting in anger, shouting, or resorting to violence is not the behaviour of a mature and responsible partner. Learn to address issues calmly and rationally.
Don’t Compare Her with Others: Avoid comparing your partner to other women. Each person is unique, and comparison only breeds dissatisfaction and resentment.
Avoid Bringing Up Past Issues: Stick to the present issue at hand and avoid referencing past conflicts that have already been resolved. Focus on resolving the current matter and moving forward.
Don’t Attack Her Womanhood: Avoid demeaning comments that attack her identity as a woman. Negative remarks about her femininity or character erode trust and respect.
Don’t Attack Her Dignity: Disparaging comments that question her intelligence or education are hurtful and counterproductive. Treat your partner with respect and address issues constructively.
Correct During Peaceful Times: Timing is essential when it comes to correction. Avoid addressing issues when anger and tension are high. Wait for a calm and peaceful moment to have a productive conversation.
Give a Helping Hand: Lead by example and support your partner. Offer assistance and participate in household responsibilities. Show appreciation for the efforts your partner puts into being a wife and mother.
Remember, if you expect your partner to be an angel in your life, create a nurturing and supportive environment for them. By implementing these 13 strategies, you can correct your partner with love, respect, and understanding, fostering a healthier and more fulfilling relationship.
