The 8-year old marriage between a couple, Muibat Lawal and Abdul Lawal, who met on Facebook before they got married in Oyo State, has collapsed following allegations by the wife that her husband was brutal and irresponsible.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the wife, Mrs. Muibat, has filed a suit before the Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking for the dissolution of the marriage which she claimed had brought sorrow to her.
The embittered woman told the Court that they met on Facebook and went into a relationship, which led to marriage. But few months into the marriage, she realised that she got married to the man, who never loved her.
According to Muibat, the husband, Abdul was selfish and never willing to make any sacrifice on her behalf and even their children when they started having them.
She also stated that he was miserly and as such refused to be up to his responsibilities towards her and their children.
An embattled Mrs. Muibat told the Court that Abdul scarcely gave her and their children feeding allowance as a result, their children looked underfed at all times.
She also said that he was indifferent to their education and contributed nothing towards their educational advancement.
An embittered Muibat added that he always assaulted her physically anytime she challenged him to be up to the tasks in the home; he was troublesome and always at loggerhead with co-tenants in their compound and people in the neighbourhood thus giving their family a bad name.
Muibat further stated that Abdul treated her with scorn even in the public.
The plaintiff said the defendant did not trust her and regularly accused her of adultery and had once slapped and molested her in the public.
She stated that she has had enough of her husband’s atrocities and therefore, prayed that their marriage be dissolved so that she can move on with her life.
She also pleaded for the custody of their children and requested for an order of perpetual injunction restraining the defendant from threatening and interfering with her private life.
However, Abdul denied all the allegations but consented to divorce.
Muibat stated: “I met my husband on Facebook and we became friends to lovers before we decided to go into marriage about eight years ago and my life fell apart”.
“Abdul hid his true nature from me while we were dating and I fell into his trap.”
He is selfish and never willing to be committed to responsibilities which required spending of money and always left these for me to handle. He never considered our children’s feeding as important, not to mention clothing and their education, not bothering if they would be able to compete fairly well with their mates in the nearest future.”
“I spend the proceeds from my business running our home so that our children would not suffer, but my husband never showed any appreciation for all my efforts.”
“Anytime I got fed up and I complained of my husband’s lackadaisical attitude towards my welfare and that of our children, he would flare up and beat me to a pulp.”
“Abdul is troublesome and unfriendly. He has on many occasions disgraced me and our children due to his unfriendly nature.
“Abdul on regular occasions picks quarell with one person or another in our compound or thr neighbourhood and would fight with them.
“My husband suddenly started accusing me of infidelity without giving me proofs to back his allegation.
“Abdul not only beat me at home, but also in the public.
“He went irate one day and slapped me outside our home and would have injured me if the people close to the scene had not rushed to the scene to rescue me from his hands.
“My lord, I do not love my husband any longer.
“I tired of his maltreatment of me and our children.
“I pray that you dissolve our marriage so that I can pick up the pieces of my life.
“I again appeal to this honourable court to grant me custody of our children, but make him responsible for their welfare, giving importance to their feeding education and health care.
“I finally beg the court to restrain him from threatening me and interfering with my private life.”
Abdul in response said, “My lord, my wife is a liar. All she said is false.
“I agree that our marriage be dissolved, I likewise no longer derive joy in it.
“I have never beaten my wife.
“My lord, I am ready to give our two children N15, 000 per month as feeding allowance and also be responsible for their education.”
The Court President, Mrs. S.M Akintayo, stated that it was glaring that both parties are no longer interested in their marriage and have been living separately and since both consented to divorce it was best that they go their different ways.
The Court consequently dissolved their union and granted the custody of their children to the plaintiff.
The Court mandated the defendant to be in charge of their upkeep and give priority to their education and health care and restrained him from threatening or interfering with her private life.
