Golf: Team Nigeria Shine, Win 2019 All Africa Challenge Trophy In Lagos

Coming from the 9th position at the 2018 edition of the All Africa Golf Challenge Trophy (AACT) held at the Achimota Golf Club in Ghana last year’s September, Nigerian lady golfers made outstanding performance in the tournament this year emerging the overall winners.

The West and Central Africa Challenge Trophy, which was organised by the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria at the Ikeja Golf Club, was sponsored by the Lagos State Sports Commission.

The AACT ended on Sunday with the Nigerian team coming first with grossed score of 493 in the 54 hole tournament which featured players from 10 African nations.

P.M. EXPRESS reports that not only did the Nigerian lady golfers emerged winners in the team event, it was also victory songs in the individual events.

Nigeria’s Alaba Adetunji was at her best winning  the individual best score with a gross of 246 (85, 80, 81); Evelyn Oyome was second best with 247 gross (80, 81, 86) in the three-day tournament, which teed off on Friday, 12 April.

Meanwhile, Team Ghana came second with a gross score of 532; Cameroon were third with 571 gross and Gabon fourth with 596 gross.

The prize awarding and closing ceremony, which was organised Sunday evening  to round off the weeklong event, was colourful as crème of Nigerian golf were in attendance, so also were the management team of Lagos State Sports Commission led by Director General Babatunde Bank-Anthony and the Forum of Chairmen of the Boards of Lagos State Sports Association led by its Chairman who doubles as chairman, Lagos State Football Association & 1st Vice President, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Seyi Akinwunmi. chairman, Lagos State Taekwondo Association, Jimi Ogunnowo and others.

The Director General of the Sports Commission, Bank-Anthony in his remarks commended the Nigerian Team for winning the tournament at home. He assured that Lagos State Government is ever ready to host the African golfers next time even as he said that international events in other sports in the state are opened to government’s support at all time.
