Government And Citizens: Shared Responsibilities In Times Of Crisis By Bosun Awoniyi

Community leaders, religious institutions, youth organizations, and civil society groups must also contribute by promoting peace, tolerance, and lawful conduct. Security challenges thrive where social cohesion breaks down. Strong communities that encourage dialogue and mutual trust are more resilient against criminal infiltration and extremist influences.

Furthermore, Nigerians must resist the temptation to normalize criminality. Paying ransoms, harboring criminals, buying stolen goods, or providing support networks for criminal groups may offer short-term convenience but ultimately strengthen insecurity. Every citizen has a role in upholding the rule of law.

Government, on its part, must earn public trust by ensuring transparency, accountability, and professionalism in security operations. Citizens are more likely to cooperate when they believe their information will be treated responsibly and when justice is applied fairly and without discrimination.

History has shown that no nation can overcome major crises through government action alone. Likewise, citizens cannot effectively confront insecurity without strong and capable institutions. The path forward requires partnership, trust, and shared commitment.

Nigeria’s security challenges are serious, but they are not insurmountable. When the government fulfills its constitutional responsibilities, and citizens actively support efforts to preserve peace and security, the nation becomes stronger, safer, and better positioned for sustainable development.

The fight against insecurity is not the government’s battle alone. It is a national responsibility that demands the participation of every Nigerian.
