A 38-year old man Matthew Ifeanyichukwu Onadike, arrested in Ogun State for killing his biological, Pa Anthony Onadike, has told the Police that he committed the act at his father’s wish in order to have peace of mind.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the suspect, Matthew, was arrested and taken into custody by the Ogun State Community, Social Orientation and Safety Corps (So-Safe) and subsequently handed over to the Sango Divisional Headquarters of the Ogun State Police Command, where he revealed why he killed him.
He disclosed that his father, Pa Anthony, had repeatedly expressed a desire for peace of mind, which he interpreted as a request for euthanasia and he did his wish by fatally attacking and killing him.
He reportedly used a cutlass to inflict several injuries on his head as he collapsed and died in the process.
This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Omolola Odutola, who confirmed that the suspect was in custody undergoing interrogation over his alleged conduct.
According to the So-Safe Corps:
“Our officers responded to a call reporting the suspect’s violent assault on his father, resulting in severe machete wounds to the elderly man’s head. Despite being rushed to a hospital, the attending doctor declared him deceased upon arrival”.
Matthew initially resisted arrest but was eventually subdued and taken into custody. During preliminary questioning, he claimed that his father’s refusal to return N70,000 he entrusted to him since 2022 motivated him to commit the murder.
He explained that his parents had advised him to quit his job, but after doing so, they failed to provide for him. He recounted a series of events, which led to the tragic incident, including his father’s repeated requests for him to return home and the financial strain he experienced after quitting his job.
Eventually, he felt compelled to act on his father’s apparent wish for death, leading to the fatal confrontation.
The Ogun State Police Command has stated that the suspect will be prosecuted for the alleged murder under the Criminal law of the State, which attracts life imprisonment, but that will be after the conclusion of investigations by the Police.
