I See The Smoke But The Fire Is Coming

Many times, we give up in our quest for that which God has called us to do because we can’t see apparent results. It takes time to get results. But many times, we give up while God is still cooking things for us.

I learnt this lesson several years ago. I went to my farm in Sagamu sometime in 2006. Early in the morning, l asked my Farm Assistant to make me some tea to burn my throat. He gathered some sticks and set up fire. He put water in a pot and put it on the newly made fire. From where l sat, all l could see was a lot of smoke. After waiting for about five minutes, l asked my man, ‘where is the fire?’ He replied, ‘the fire is coming sir.’ The smoke got bigger but still no fire. I decided to be patient.

“For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.”
Habakkuk 2:3

After about ten minutes, the smoke cleared and in its place a bright fire emerged. So it is in real life. We may have to do with the smoke until the fire shows up. But if you see the smoke, trust me, the fire is coming.

“Whoever is in a hurry shows that the thing he is about is too big for him.”
Lord Chesterfield

As a little boy, I loved to plant things. I would plant corns, beans, yams and sugarcane. I would barely be able to sleep that night. Early the next morning, I would be back digging up the seed to check what’s happening. I would repeat the same dumb thing everyday until the seed dies.

Planting is fun. Nurture is work. Hard work. Depending on the kind of seed you’re sowing, the gestation period differs. If you want tomatoes, all you need is 6 weeks to 3 months depending on the type. If you want yam, one full year is required. If it is an orange or mango, you are looking at 3 – 5 years.

So here is the lesson – keep sowing. Keep nurturing. Keep paying the price. Trust me, one day it will all add up and then some more. It may tarry. That is, some incidences, accidents, human conspiracies, envy and all other base human tendencies can slow it down. He says, ‘wait for it.’ You may have to do like Apostle Paul

“….. and having done all, to stand.”

Sometimes, standing is all you can do. It’s a season. Nothing will work. Nothing will move. Nothing will shake. Nobody will call. Nobody will ask and nobody will give. It’s the ‘standing season.’ You have done all you know how to do. You have loved and have helped. You have given and you blessed others. Yet nothing is happening in or for you.

Don’t give up. Hang in there. Help is on the way.
