The Kano Magistrate Court has ordered the detention of a jilted Chinese National, Geng Quanrong, who allegedly stabbed his Nigerian lover, Ummukulsum Sani Buhari, for dumping him over the alleged murder.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that the Chinese, Geng allegedly killed the 23-year old Ummu last Friday, 16th September, 2022, in her home in Kabuga Quarters, Dorayi Babba area of Kano State.
He was arrested after the dastardly act and he reportedly confessed to the crime after he was arrested by the Police in Kano.
The 47-year old Geng has told the Police that he killed Ummu because she promised to get married to him but later reneged on that promise after he had spent so much money on her.
He was arraigned on 21st September, 2022 and the Court ordered that he be remanded in Kurmawa Medium Security Custodial Centre pending the outcome of the DPP’s advice.
The order of the Court followed the arraignment of the accused person before the Court by the Police on the charge of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the penal code.
However, the Magistrate, Hanif Sanusi Ciroma, held that the Court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case.
The prosecution counsel, Khalifa Auwal Hashim, thereafter appealed to the Court to return the accused to a custodial facility since it had no jurisdiction pending the legal advice from the Kano State Ministry of Justice.
In granting the appeal, the Magistrate ordered that the accused person be remanded at the custodial facility till 13th October, 2022, for arraignment before a Court with competent jurisdiction.
The defendant may likely be transferred to the High Court for trial over the murder charge if the DPP’s advice finds him culpable and recommends for his trial. And he may be sentenced to life imprisonment if he is tried and found guilty before the Court for the alleged offence in Kano.
