Lagos State Govt Targets Reduction In Illegal Building Construction

The Lagos State Government has declared its determination to reduce incidents of illegal building construction, just as it extends its Special Enforcement Operations to Lekki in line with the present administration’s zero-tolerance for illegal construction across the State.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, who disclosed this while leading the enforcement operations, stated that it has become imperative to stem the tide of illegal buildings and collapse for protection of the built environment, through enforcing adherence to planning guidelines.

“This explains why we must stop those who are bent on jeopardising the operative Development Plans of Lagos State by not tolerating any form of illegal physical developments in the State”, he said.

Emphasising that the government would continue to seal erring property, enforce compliance and prosecute where necessary, the Commissioner stated that the Special Operation began in Lekki Phase 1 on Tuesday, when 19 buildings were sealed, with 23 others also sealed on Thursday, totalling 42 buildings sealed so far in the area.

He maintained that the affected property were sealed due to the fact that they have no planning permit, demolition permit and stage certification, urging property owners in Lekki Phase 1 and other parts of the State to ensure that they comply with Physical Planning Laws and avoid the embarrassment of having their property sealed.

Salako, therefore, enjoined those whose property were sealed for the infractions to report to the Office of the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja to perfect their documents.
