A 26-year-old man, David Isaiah, has been sentenced to death by hanging for kidnapping and killing a commercial sex worker, Comfort James, who rejected him over sex in a brothel in Ekiti State.
P.M.EXPRESS reports that it was the judgment of the Ekiti High Court, which found Isaiah guilty of conspiracy, kidnapping and murder, and sentenced him accordingly.
The presiding judge, Justice Olalekan Olatawura, gave the judgement and sentenced Isaiah to death for murder, life in prison for kidnapping, and 21 years in prison for conspiracy.
The Court stated that Isaiah and one Saviour Daniel, who died while the case was still ongoing, conspired and carried out the kidnapping and murder of James on February 6, 2024, in Ado Ekiti.
The State prosecutor, Ibironke Odetola, told the Court that their actions were against the Ekiti State Criminal Law of 2021 and during the trial, the manager of Afrika Brothel in Irona, Ado Ekiti, said that James had called her coworkers to say she had been kidnapped and that the kidnappers wanted a N100,000 ransom.
The manager reported the matter to the Police and Civil Defence Corps and the suspects were later arrested after which they personally showed the Police where they left the victim’s body.
The prosecutor brought six witnesses to Court and submitted evidence like Isaiah’s confessional statement, pictures of the victim, her slippers, SIM cards, and a bottle of poison.
In his confession, Isaiah admitted to tying the victim’s hands and neck. When the ransom plan failed, and worried that she had seen their faces, they forced her to drink herbicide, which led to her death. He did not bring any witnesses to defend himself.
The judge said the prosecution clearly proved the case, and there was no reason to go easy on the defendant.
“The judgment of this Court upon you is that you be hanged until you are dead. May God have mercy on your soul.” The judge declared.
